SNL brings back MacGruber, with an Epstein files twist

By Eric November 18, 2025

In a highly anticipated return to “Saturday Night Live” (SNL), Will Forte reprised his beloved character MacGruber during the November 15 episode, but this time, the comedic sketch took a darker turn with references to the controversial Jeffrey Epstein files. Known for his outrageous antics and bomb-defusing escapades, MacGruber found himself entangled in a web of scandal, as his past connections to Epstein became the focal point of the skits. The episode’s three pre-taped MacGruber shorts followed the familiar formula: MacGruber, alongside his assistants Colton (played by host Glen Powell) and Tawnee (Chloe Fineman), attempts to disarm a bomb while trapped in a control room. However, the humor quickly shifted from slapstick to serious when Colton revealed he possessed an uncensored copy of the Epstein files, leading to MacGruber’s panicked shredding of the documents—hinting at his own questionable ties to Epstein’s infamous circle.

This episode wasn’t just a showcase for MacGruber; it was steeped in current events surrounding the Epstein scandal. The cold open featured a satirical take on Donald Trump’s reaction to the recent release of thousands of Epstein emails, with James Austin Johnson impersonating the former president. Throughout the episode, the Weekend Update segment continued to poke fun at Trump, further intertwining the themes of scandal and political commentary. The juxtaposition of MacGruber’s comedic incompetence with the serious implications of his connections to Epstein created a unique blend of humor and social critique, making this episode particularly resonant.

SNL’s decision to tackle such sensitive topics through the lens of comedy highlights the show’s ongoing commitment to addressing real-world issues, albeit in a lighthearted manner. By weaving together the absurdity of MacGruber’s antics with the gravity of the Epstein files, the episode not only entertained but also prompted viewers to reflect on the intersections of humor, celebrity, and accountability in contemporary society. As the episode aired, it sparked conversations about the responsibilities of public figures and the ways in which comedy can serve as a platform for commentary on pressing societal issues.

on the list. It’s going to take more than a pencil sharpener and a square of foil to get him out of this mess.
