Jihadism and Russia: a toxic mix in the Sahel

By Eric November 17, 2025

In recent years, the southern spread of instability has emerged as a significant concern for coastal states, particularly in regions like the Mediterranean and parts of West Africa. This instability, often fueled by a combination of political unrest, economic hardship, and environmental challenges, poses a direct threat not only to the affected nations but also to their neighbors and the broader international community. As migration flows increase and security challenges mount, the West must develop a comprehensive strategy to address these issues effectively.

One of the key factors contributing to this instability is the interplay between governance failures and socioeconomic pressures. For instance, countries in the Sahel region, such as Mali and Niger, have experienced a surge in violence from extremist groups, exacerbated by climate change and food insecurity. These conditions have led to mass displacement, with many individuals seeking refuge in coastal states like Italy and Spain. The resulting influx of migrants has strained resources and heightened tensions within these nations, prompting calls for a coordinated response from Western governments. The challenge lies in balancing humanitarian assistance with security measures, ensuring that aid reaches those in need while also addressing the root causes of migration.

To counter this growing threat, the West must adopt a multi-faceted approach that includes diplomatic engagement, development aid, and strategic partnerships with affected countries. Initiatives aimed at strengthening local governance, promoting economic resilience, and enhancing regional cooperation are crucial in fostering stability. For example, the European Union has launched various programs to support agricultural development and bolster security forces in the Sahel, but these efforts need to be scaled up and integrated into a broader strategy. Additionally, engaging with local communities and empowering them to address their own challenges will be essential in creating lasting solutions. By taking proactive measures to mitigate instability in southern regions, the West can not only protect its own interests but also contribute to a more secure and prosperous global landscape.
