Trump Administration Scraps Cash Payments for Delayed or Canceled Flights

In a significant move to enhance passenger rights, a new rule introduced by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) aims to provide comprehensive support for air travelers facing significant delays. Officially enacted a year ago, this regulation mandates that airlines must offer meals, lodging, and ground transportation, alongside cash payments, for travelers who experience delays exceeding three hours. This initiative is designed to address the frustrations and inconveniences that travelers often endure during prolonged delays, particularly those that arise from factors within the airline’s control, such as mechanical issues or staffing shortages.

The implementation of this rule comes in the wake of growing public demand for better treatment of airline passengers, especially in light of the travel disruptions witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, a survey conducted by the DOT revealed that a significant portion of air travelers expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of support from airlines during extended delays.
