These ships disappeared in Lake Superior a century ago. Watch as they’re found again
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has made significant strides in maritime archaeology by locating two of three historic shipwrecks from a devastating storm that struck Lake Superior over a century ago. The first ship, the *Henry B. Smith*, was discovered in 2021, while the second, the *M. M. Drake*, was found in 2022. These discoveries not only illuminate the perils faced by Great Lakes shipping during the late 19th and early 20th centuries but also serve as a poignant reminder of the lives lost to the unforgiving waters of Lake Superior.
The storm that claimed these vessels occurred on November 10, 1913, and is often referred to as the “Big Blow.” This catastrophic weather event resulted in the sinking of numerous ships and the tragic loss of over 250 lives, marking it as one of the deadliest storms in Great Lakes history. The *Henry B. Smith*, a wooden freighter, was carrying a load of lumber when it succumbed to the storm’s fierce winds and waves. Its wreckage was located at a depth of approximately 600 feet, revealing a remarkably preserved vessel that offers insights into early 20th-century shipbuilding and maritime operations. Similarly, the *M. M. Drake*, which was transporting coal at the time of its sinking, was found in a relatively intact state, providing a valuable glimpse into the era’s shipping practices.
The GLSHS’s discoveries are not only significant from a historical perspective but also contribute to ongoing efforts to preserve and educate the public about the Great Lakes’ maritime heritage. The society has employed advanced sonar technology and underwater drones to locate these wrecks, showcasing the intersection of modern technology and historical research. As they continue their search for the third ship, the *C. M. T. P. Smith*, the GLSHS remains committed to honoring the memory of those who perished in the storm and ensuring that the stories of these vessels are not forgotten. The findings underscore the importance of maritime archaeology in understanding our past and the ever-present dangers of navigating the Great Lakes.
