Asia’s most treacherous sailing season

By Eric November 15, 2025

In recent months, the plight of Rohingya refugees has drawn international attention as many undertake perilous sea crossings in search of safety and a better life. Fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar, these individuals often embark on treacherous journeys across the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, facing numerous dangers, including overcrowded and unseaworthy boats, harsh weather conditions, and the threat of human trafficking. Reports indicate that the desperation among the Rohingya has surged, with many families opting to risk their lives on these dangerous voyages rather than remain in refugee camps where conditions are dire and opportunities for a better future are almost nonexistent.

Tragically, not all who attempt these crossings survive. Recent statistics reveal a sharp increase in the number of deaths at sea, with the United Nations estimating that hundreds of Rohingya have drowned in the past year alone. For instance, a harrowing incident in early 2023 saw a boat capsizing, leading to the loss of dozens of lives. Survivors recount stories of harrowing conditions, including limited food and water, and the constant fear of being intercepted by authorities. Despite the risks, many Rohingya feel they have no choice but to embark on these journeys, driven by the hope of reaching countries like Malaysia or Indonesia, where they believe they will find refuge and opportunities for a new beginning.

The international community faces a pressing challenge in addressing this humanitarian crisis. While some nations have taken steps to provide assistance, the response has been inconsistent, and many Rohingya remain in limbo, caught between their homeland’s violence and the dangers of their escape. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for governments and organizations to work together to find sustainable solutions that address the root causes of the crisis, provide safe passage for refugees, and ensure their rights and dignity are upheld. The Rohingya’s struggle for survival is not just a regional issue; it is a global humanitarian concern that demands urgent attention and action from the international community.
