Can AI Avoid the Enshittification Trap?

By Eric October 20, 2025

In his thought-provoking analysis, Cory Doctorow introduces the concept of “enshittification,” a term he uses to describe the inevitable decline of tech platforms as they prioritize profit over user experience. Doctorow argues that as these platforms gain dominance and scale, they often start to exploit their users, leading to a degradation of service quality and user satisfaction. This phenomenon can be observed in various tech giants, where initial offerings that prioritize user engagement and value gradually shift towards maximizing revenue, often at the expense of the very users that helped them grow. For instance, platforms like Facebook and Twitter began as spaces for genuine interaction but have evolved into environments laden with intrusive ads, algorithmic manipulation, and privacy concerns, illustrating the core of Doctorow’s theory.

As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become increasingly integral to the digital landscape, Doctorow warns that they are not immune to the same fate. The rapid monetization of AI capabilities—through targeted advertising, data harvesting, and subscription models—could lead to a similar trajectory of enshittification. For example, as AI tools become more powerful, there is a temptation for companies to prioritize short-term profits by overloading users with ads or limiting access to services unless they pay premium fees. This could result in a less innovative and more frustrating user experience, ultimately driving users away and stifling the very creativity that fueled the AI revolution in the first place. Doctorow’s insights serve as a cautionary tale for both developers and consumers, urging a reevaluation of how tech platforms are structured and monetized to ensure they remain beneficial and user-centric in an increasingly AI-driven world.
