These ships disappeared in Lake Superior a century ago. Watch as they’re found again
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society has made significant strides in maritime archaeology by locating two of the three ships that sank during a fierce storm on Lake Superior over a century ago. The first of these discoveries was made in 2021 when researchers located the wreck of the “Henry B. Smith,” a freighter that met its fate during a powerful storm in November 1913, which claimed the lives of 250 sailors across the Great Lakes. The ship, which was carrying a cargo of iron ore, was discovered resting on the lakebed, remarkably well-preserved due to the cold, fresh waters of Lake Superior, which slow down the decay of wooden vessels.
The second ship, the “M. M. Drake,” was found in 2022, further illuminating the tragic events of that fateful storm. The discovery of these vessels not only sheds light on the dangers faced by mariners in the early 20th century but also highlights the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes. The society’s team utilized advanced sonar technology and underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to locate and document these wrecks, providing insights into the shipbuilding practices of the time and the challenges posed by severe weather conditions. While the third ship, the “L. A. Dunton,” remains elusive, the successful identification of the Henry B. Smith and M. M. Drake serves as a testament to the ongoing efforts to preserve and honor the legacy of those who navigated the treacherous waters of Lake Superior.
These discoveries not only contribute to historical knowledge but also serve as a reminder of the power of nature and the human stories intertwined with these maritime tragedies. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society continues its mission to explore, document, and educate the public about the Great Lakes’ maritime heritage, ensuring that the memories of these lost ships and their crews are not forgotten. As they pursue the final ship, the society invites the community to engage with this history, fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s nautical past and the ongoing efforts to safeguard its underwater treasures.
