The U.S. Is Skipping This Year’s Climate Summit. For Many, That’s OK.

By Eric November 15, 2025

The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) is currently underway in Belém, Brazil, bringing together global leaders, environmental experts, and activists to tackle pressing climate issues. Scheduled to run through November 21, the conference aims to build upon the commitments made during previous COP meetings, particularly those established in the Paris Agreement. This year’s discussions are especially critical as nations grapple with the urgent need to address climate change’s accelerating impacts, including rising sea levels, severe weather events, and biodiversity loss. Brazil, as a host nation, plays a pivotal role, especially given its vast Amazon rainforest, which is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” due to its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide.

During the conference, key topics include the implementation of strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing climate resilience, and mobilizing financial resources to support developing countries in their climate efforts. Notably, discussions are expected to focus on the importance of protecting and restoring ecosystems, with Brazil’s rich biodiversity at the forefront. For instance, the Amazon rainforest’s preservation is crucial not only for local communities but also for global climate stability. The conference will also address the need for innovative technological solutions and sustainable practices across various sectors, including agriculture, energy, and transportation.

As COP30 progresses, the outcomes of these discussions could have far-reaching implications for international climate policy and cooperation. The conference serves as a platform for nations to reaffirm their commitments, share best practices, and hold each other accountable in the fight against climate change. With the stakes higher than ever, the world is watching closely to see if COP30 can deliver actionable plans and commitments that will pave the way for a sustainable future. The urgency of the climate crisis demands immediate and coordinated action, making this year’s conference one of the most significant yet.
