Why do European cities have milder winters than those in North America, despite being at the same latitude?

By Eric November 13, 2025

Despite being situated on the same latitude, London, England, and Calgary, Alberta, experience starkly different winter temperatures, with Calgary averaging about 15 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius) cooler than London in January. This temperature disparity can be attributed to a combination of geographical features, oceanic influences, and climatic patterns. London benefits from a temperate maritime climate, heavily influenced by the North Atlantic Drift, a warm ocean current that moderates temperatures and keeps winters relatively mild. In contrast, Calgary experiences a continental climate characterized by cold winters, influenced by its elevation and proximity to the Rocky Mountains, which can lead to significant temperature drops.

The geographical positioning of these two cities plays a crucial role in their climate. London, located near the coast, is shielded from extreme temperature fluctuations due to the warming effects of the ocean. The North Atlantic Drift brings warm air from the tropics, resulting in average January temperatures around 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). Conversely, Calgary, situated at a higher elevation of approximately 3,400 feet (1,050 meters) and farther inland, is more susceptible to cold Arctic air masses. This elevation contributes to its harsher winters, with January temperatures typically hovering around 21 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius). Additionally, Calgary’s proximity to the Rockies can lead to Chinook winds, which can cause rapid temperature increases but are often followed by sharp drops.

Understanding these climatic differences highlights the complexities of weather patterns influenced by geographical and oceanic factors. For those living in or traveling between these cities, acknowledging the stark contrast in winter weather is essential for proper preparation. While London may offer a milder winter experience, Calgary’s colder climate presents unique challenges and opportunities for winter sports enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. This fascinating comparison underscores the importance of geography in shaping local climates, reminding us that latitude alone does not determine temperature.

London is at the same latitude as Calgary, Alberta. So why is the Canadian city about 15 degrees Fahrenheit (8.3 degrees Celsius) cooler in January?
