Tackling Climate Change Without the U.S.

By Eric November 13, 2025

The U.N. climate conference, known as COP30, is currently taking place in Belém, Brazil, gathering world leaders, negotiators, and climate activists to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change. This year’s conference is particularly significant as it marks a critical juncture in global climate negotiations, with countries evaluating their progress towards the goals set in the Paris Agreement. Belém, nestled in the Amazon rainforest, serves as a poignant backdrop for discussions on environmental preservation and sustainable development, highlighting the region’s vital role in combating climate change.

At COP30, delegates are focusing on several key themes, including the need for enhanced climate financing, the preservation of biodiversity, and the importance of indigenous rights in environmental stewardship. Brazil’s unique position as a host country allows it to showcase its commitment to protecting the Amazon, which is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth.” The conference has seen calls for developed nations to fulfill their financial pledges to support developing countries in their climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. Notably, discussions have also centered on the need for more ambitious emissions reduction targets, particularly from major polluters, as scientists warn that current efforts are insufficient to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Throughout the conference, various side events and workshops are being held to foster collaboration between governments, NGOs, and the private sector. For instance, initiatives aimed at promoting renewable energy solutions and sustainable agriculture practices are being highlighted as essential pathways to achieving climate resilience. Moreover, the involvement of indigenous leaders has brought critical perspectives on traditional ecological knowledge and the importance of protecting ancestral lands. As COP30 progresses, the outcomes will be closely watched, with the hope that meaningful agreements will emerge to accelerate global climate action and forge a sustainable future for generations to come.
