Millions more online consultation submissions by patients to practices in September

By Eric November 13, 2025

In September 2025, the National Health Service (NHS) reported a significant surge in the use of online consultation requests, with a staggering 6.5 million submissions made to General Practitioner (GP) practices across the UK. This marks a 50% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, highlighting a clear shift in how patients are choosing to interact with their healthcare providers. The rise in online consultations reflects the NHS’s ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and convenience for patients, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated the adoption of digital health solutions.

The trend towards online consultations is part of a broader strategy by the NHS to empower patients with more choices in managing their health. With the integration of technology into healthcare, individuals can now book appointments, request prescription refills, and seek medical advice from the comfort of their own homes. This not only reduces the burden on GP practices but also allows for more efficient use of time for both patients and healthcare professionals. For example, patients can submit queries about minor ailments or follow-up questions regarding ongoing treatments without the need for an in-person visit, which can be particularly beneficial for those with mobility issues or those living in remote areas.

The growing preference for online consultations is also indicative of changing attitudes towards healthcare delivery. Many patients appreciate the flexibility and immediacy that digital consultations provide, allowing them to receive timely medical advice without the long waits often associated with traditional appointments. As the NHS continues to expand its digital services, it aims to ensure that these innovations are accessible to all demographics, including older adults who may be less familiar with technology. By fostering a culture of digital engagement, the NHS not only improves patient satisfaction but also enhances the overall efficiency of the healthcare system, paving the way for a more responsive and patient-centered approach to health management.

Millions of people are using online consultation requests to contact their GP practice each month, as the NHS gives people more choice in how they can safely contact their family doctor. New figures show 6.5 million online consultation requests were submitted to GPs in September 2025, up half compared to the same period last year […]
