How Britain Got Investors to Line Up for Nuclear Power

By Eric November 13, 2025

Situated on the picturesque North Sea coast of England, Sizewell B nuclear power station has been a cornerstone of the UK’s energy landscape since it began operations in 1995. As the only pressurized water reactor in the country, Sizewell B has played a significant role in providing low-carbon electricity to millions of homes and businesses, contributing to the UK’s overall energy security and its ambitious climate goals. With a capacity of 1,190 megawatts, this facility has consistently demonstrated its reliability, generating enough power to supply approximately 2 million homes annually. The station’s operation has not only emphasized the importance of nuclear energy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but has also highlighted the need for ongoing investment in nuclear technology to meet the growing energy demands of the future.

In close proximity to Sizewell B, the construction of Sizewell C is underway, marking a significant advancement in the UK’s nuclear energy strategy. This new project aims to build a pair of advanced EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) reactors, which are designed to produce around 3,200 megawatts of electricity—essentially doubling the output of Sizewell B. As the UK seeks to transition away from fossil fuels and bolster its renewable energy sources, Sizewell C represents a pivotal step towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs during its construction phase and will contribute to long-term employment opportunities once operational. Additionally, Sizewell C is designed with enhanced safety features and greater efficiency, reflecting the latest advancements in nuclear technology.

The development of Sizewell C has not been without its controversies, as local communities and environmental groups voice concerns regarding its environmental impact and the potential risks associated with nuclear power. However, proponents argue that the benefits of nuclear energy—such as its ability to provide a stable and continuous power supply—outweigh these concerns, especially as the UK grapples with energy security issues amid rising global energy prices. As Sizewell B continues to operate, the successful completion of Sizewell C could herald a new era for nuclear energy in the UK, reinforcing its role as a vital component of the nation’s energy mix and its commitment to a sustainable future.
