Blue Origin delays second New Glenn launch again due to solar storms

By Eric November 12, 2025

In recent weeks, the captivating auroras that have been illuminating the night skies across North America are the result of heightened solar activity, specifically a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun. These spectacular displays of natural light, often seen in regions closer to the poles, have been visible further south than usual, thrilling skywatchers and photographers alike. However, this same solar activity has also led to disruptions in satellite communications and power grids, causing a notable delay in various sectors, including transportation and technology.

The increased solar activity is part of an ongoing solar cycle, which peaks approximately every 11 years. This cycle is characterized by fluctuations in solar radiation and magnetic activity, with the current cycle, Solar Cycle 25, expected to reach its peak around 2025. As the sun releases bursts of charged particles, these CMEs interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating stunning auroras but also leading to geomagnetic storms. These storms can interfere with GPS systems, airline navigation, and even power grids, prompting some airlines to reroute flights and causing minor outages in certain areas. For instance, recent reports indicated that airlines had to adjust their flight paths to avoid potential disruptions caused by these geomagnetic storms.

While the beauty of the auroras captures the imagination, the practical implications of solar activity cannot be overlooked. The delays and disruptions serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of our technology and natural phenomena. As scientists continue to study solar activity and its effects on Earth, they emphasize the importance of preparedness in mitigating the impacts of such cosmic events. The recent surge in auroras serves as both a spectacular natural event and a cautionary tale about the vulnerabilities of our modern infrastructure to the whims of the sun.

The same solar activity that’s been lighting up the night sky in North America is causing this particular delay.
