US warns Russia not to touch American nuclear technology at Ukrainian nuclear plant

By Eric November 12, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the United States has issued a stern warning to Russia regarding the sensitive nuclear technology housed at a nuclear power plant within Ukrainian territory. This warning was articulated in a letter from the U.S. Department of Energy to Rosatom, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation. The letter, sent last month, underscores the U.S. government’s serious concerns over the potential risks posed by Russia’s military operations near critical nuclear infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly in light of the ongoing war that has ravaged the region since 2022.

The U.S. has emphasized the importance of safeguarding nuclear materials and technology, particularly in a volatile environment where military actions could inadvertently lead to catastrophic consequences. The letter highlights that the nuclear technology in question is not only vital for Ukraine’s energy needs but also poses a significant risk if it were to fall into the wrong hands or be damaged during conflict. The U.S. government has urged Russia to refrain from any actions that could jeopardize the integrity of this technology, which includes reactors, spent fuel, and other sensitive components critical for nuclear energy production. This warning comes amid reports of increased military activity in the vicinity of Ukrainian nuclear facilities, raising alarms about the potential for severe nuclear incidents.

Contextually, the U.S. warning reflects broader geopolitical tensions and the international community’s concerns about nuclear safety in conflict zones. The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, has been a focal point of international scrutiny, particularly after reports of shelling and military maneuvers in its vicinity. The U.S. letter to Rosatom serves as a reminder of the delicate balance required in managing nuclear technology within a war-torn country and the global implications of any missteps. As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, the international community remains vigilant, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of nuclear facilities amid ongoing hostilities.

The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy sent to Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy firm Rosatom last month.
