Warning against mushroom foraging in California after fatal poisoning

By Eric December 8, 2025

In recent weeks, California has seen a troubling surge in poisonings linked to the wild death cap mushroom, a highly toxic fungus that poses significant risks to those who mistakenly consume it. According to the California Poison Control System, there have been 21 reported cases of poisoning attributed to these dangerous mushrooms, which are particularly prevalent in the state’s coastal regions and woodlands. The death cap mushroom, scientifically known as Amanita phalloides, is notorious for its lethal properties; even a small amount can lead to severe liver and kidney damage, and in some instances, death. This alarming increase in poisonings underscores the critical need for public awareness and education regarding the identification of wild mushrooms and the potential dangers they pose.

The rise in poisonings has prompted health officials to issue warnings, especially as foraging for wild mushrooms becomes more popular in California’s vibrant outdoor culture. Many individuals, including inexperienced foragers, are drawn to the idea of harvesting their own food from nature, but the risks can be fatal if one mistakenly collects and consumes death cap mushrooms. Symptoms of poisoning often do not appear until 6 to 12 hours after ingestion, making it difficult for victims to connect their illness to the mushrooms they consumed. This delay can lead to a false sense of security, as initial symptoms may resemble those of less severe ailments, further complicating timely medical intervention.

In light of these incidents, experts are urging the public to exercise extreme caution when foraging for mushrooms and to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of the death cap mushroom. Key identifying features include a greenish cap, white gills, and a bulbous base. Additionally, foragers are encouraged to seek guidance from experienced mycologists before consuming any wild mushrooms. As California grapples with this concerning trend, the message is clear: while the allure of foraging can be enticing, the potential dangers of misidentifying mushrooms can have dire consequences. Public education campaigns and increased vigilance are essential to ensure the safety of those who enjoy the natural bounty of California’s diverse ecosystems.

California’s poison control system says there have been 21 poisonings in recent weeks from wild death cap mushrooms.
