A&Es under siege from hiccups and ingrowing toenails

By Eric December 8, 2025

Last winter, the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK faced an overwhelming influx of patients at Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments, with hundreds of thousands seeking treatment for minor ailments that could have been managed outside of emergency care. New data reveals that over 200,000 A&E visits were for conditions deemed non-urgent, such as hiccups, ingrowing toenails, and itchy skin. Notably, there were 96,998 visits for sore throats and 8,669 for itchy skin, highlighting a concerning trend where individuals are turning to emergency services for everyday health issues. This surge in non-urgent cases places additional strain on an already burdened healthcare system, particularly during peak winter months when A&E departments are typically inundated with patients suffering from more serious conditions.

The NHS is urging patients to consider alternative healthcare options for minor health concerns, such as visiting local pharmacies, consulting with general practitioners, or utilizing telehealth services. These avenues can provide timely and appropriate care without overwhelming emergency departments. The statistics underline a critical challenge facing the NHS: the need for better public education regarding when to seek emergency care versus other healthcare resources. As the NHS continues to grapple with staffing shortages and increased demand, addressing the misuse of A&E services is essential for ensuring that those who truly need urgent care can access it promptly. By promoting awareness of appropriate healthcare pathways, the NHS hopes to alleviate the burden on A&E departments and improve overall patient care.
