US considers wider sanctions on Sudanese army and RSF as ceasefire efforts falter

By Eric December 7, 2025

In a significant diplomatic development, the United States is reevaluating its approach to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, as efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have stalled. The U.S. envoy, Massad Boulos, recently returned from a fruitless mission aimed at persuading the warring factions to agree to a cessation of hostilities. This lack of progress has prompted the Biden administration to consider a broader range of sanctions against the key players in Sudan’s civil war, reflecting a growing frustration with the inability to bring about a peaceful resolution. The situation is particularly urgent as Norway prepares to host talks intended to restore civilian governance in Sudan, which has been mired in violence and instability since the military coup in October 2021.

The backdrop to this diplomatic push includes a recent appeal from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to former President Donald Trump, who publicly announced last week that efforts were underway to end the conflict. This marked a notable shift, as Trump’s involvement suggests a renewed focus on the region from U.S. leadership, albeit amidst a complex geopolitical landscape. The civil war in Sudan, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions, underscores the dire need for effective international mediation. While the U.S. has historically played a role in Sudanese affairs, the recent failure of Boulos to secure a ceasefire indicates the challenges that lie ahead. The proposed sanctions could target military leaders and their affiliates, aiming to pressure them into negotiations and ultimately restore stability to the country.

As Norway prepares to host the upcoming talks, the international community watches closely, hoping for a breakthrough that could lead to the reinstatement of a civilian government. The stakes are high, as the humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to escalate, with millions in need of assistance. The U.S. and its allies are under increasing pressure to find a viable solution, and the outcome of these negotiations could have significant implications for the future of Sudan and the broader region. The situation remains fluid, and the effectiveness of any sanctions or diplomatic efforts will depend on the willingness of the conflicting parties to engage in meaningful dialogue.
