High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric December 6, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation over the past five decades, proving to be a reliable and efficient alternative to air travel and traditional rail systems. Originating in Japan with the Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” introduced in 1964, high-speed rail (HSR) has expanded globally, with countries like France, Spain, and China investing heavily in this technology. These trains can reach speeds of over 186 miles per hour (300 kilometers per hour), significantly reducing travel times between major cities. For example, the journey from Paris to Lyon, which once took over four hours by conventional train, is now completed in just two hours via the TGV, France’s high-speed train service. This efficiency not only enhances passenger convenience but also promotes economic growth by improving connectivity and accessibility.

The environmental benefits of high-speed trains also cannot be overlooked. As nations strive to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, HSR presents a greener alternative to car and air travel. Trains emit significantly less greenhouse gas per passenger mile compared to planes and cars, making them an attractive option for eco-conscious travelers. In countries like Japan, where the Shinkansen has been operational for decades, the system has consistently demonstrated its ability to operate with minimal environmental impact. Furthermore, the integration of renewable energy sources into train operations is an emerging trend, further enhancing the sustainability of high-speed rail systems.

Despite the numerous advantages, the development of high-speed rail is not without challenges. High capital costs, lengthy construction times, and political hurdles can impede progress, particularly in regions where existing infrastructure needs substantial upgrades. For instance, in the United States, efforts to establish a nationwide high-speed rail network have faced significant opposition and delays. However, as more nations recognize the benefits of HSR, including reduced congestion, lower travel times, and environmental sustainability, investment in high-speed rail is likely to increase. As we look to the future, the continued evolution of high-speed trains will play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of global transportation, offering a glimpse into a more interconnected and sustainable world.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
