Fire Threatens Iran’s Ancient Forest, a World Heritage Site

By Eric December 6, 2025

Nestled in the northern part of Iran, the Hyrcanian Forests represent a vital ecological treasure, renowned for their rich biodiversity and ancient lineage. These forests, which stretch along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea, are believed to be remnants of the lush woodlands that once blanketed much of the northern hemisphere. According to experts, the Hyrcanian Forests are among the oldest ecosystems on the planet, with some areas dating back over 25 million years. This unique environment fosters a wide array of flora and fauna, including many endemic species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The forests are characterized by their towering deciduous trees, such as beech, oak, and hornbeam, which create a dense canopy that supports a vibrant undergrowth of shrubs and herbs.

The significance of the Hyrcanian Forests extends beyond their age and biodiversity; they play a crucial role in climate regulation and conservation efforts. These forests act as carbon sinks, absorbing significant amounts of CO2 and helping to mitigate climate change. Furthermore, they provide essential habitat for numerous wildlife species, including the Persian leopard and the Caspian turtle, both of which are threatened by habitat loss and environmental changes. The region is also culturally significant, as it has been home to various human communities for centuries, who rely on its resources for their livelihoods while also being stewards of its natural beauty.

However, the Hyrcanian Forests face numerous threats, including deforestation, illegal logging, and urban expansion. As Iran continues to develop economically, the pressure on these ancient woodlands has intensified, raising concerns among environmentalists and conservationists. Efforts are being made to protect and preserve this invaluable ecosystem, with initiatives aimed at sustainable forestry practices and the establishment of protected areas. By raising awareness about the importance of the Hyrcanian Forests, both locally and globally, there is hope that these ancient woods can be safeguarded for future generations, ensuring that their ecological richness and cultural heritage endure.

A forest in Iran that is part of the Hyrcanian Forests, which are “among the oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems across the globe,” an expert said.
