Fire Threatens Iran’s Ancient Forest, a World Heritage Site

By Eric December 4, 2025

The Hyrcanian Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in northern Iran, are recognized as one of the oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Spanning approximately 56,000 square kilometers along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, these ancient woodlands are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the region. The forests date back to the Tertiary period, around 25 million years ago, and their unique climatic conditions have fostered the growth of diverse species, including towering beech, oak, and elm trees. This biodiversity not only contributes to the ecological balance of the region but also plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change by acting as a significant carbon sink.

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of the Hyrcanian Forests in terms of conservation and environmental sustainability. Experts warn that these forests face serious threats from deforestation, urbanization, and climate change, which jeopardize their delicate ecosystems. For instance, illegal logging and agricultural expansion have led to habitat loss, putting numerous species at risk. Conservation efforts are underway, with local and international organizations working to protect these vital ecosystems. Initiatives include reforestation projects, stricter regulations on logging, and community education programs aimed at promoting sustainable land use practices. By raising awareness of the ecological significance of the Hyrcanian Forests, stakeholders hope to ensure that these ancient woodlands continue to thrive for generations to come.

In addition to their ecological value, the Hyrcanian Forests hold cultural and historical significance for the people of Iran. They are a source of livelihood for many local communities who rely on the forest for resources such as timber and non-timber forest products. Furthermore, the forests are intertwined with local traditions and folklore, enriching the cultural heritage of the region. As the world increasingly recognizes the importance of preserving natural habitats, the Hyrcanian Forests serve as a poignant reminder of the need to balance development with conservation, ensuring that this irreplaceable treasure remains a vibrant part of our planet’s biodiversity.

A forest in Iran that is part of the Hyrcanian Forests, which are “among the oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems across the globe,” an expert said.
