National patient safety alert – harm from incorrect recording of penicillin allergy as penicillamine allergy

This alert addresses a critical issue concerning the inadvertent recording of patients’ penicillin allergies as penicillamine allergies within electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems. Such errors pose a serious risk to patient safety, as mislabeling can lead to inappropriate treatment decisions, ultimately jeopardizing patient health.
Penicillin and penicillamine, while sounding similar, are fundamentally different medications used for distinct purposes. Penicillin is a widely used antibiotic, whereas penicillamine is a medication primarily used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson’s disease. The alert emphasizes the importance of accurate allergy documentation, as misclassification can result in patients being denied essential antibiotics due to a mistaken belief that they are allergic to penicillin. This could lead to severe consequences, including increased risk of infections, prolonged hospital stays, and even fatalities in vulnerable populations.
