Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 30, 2025

The latest figures from the National Health Service (NHS) reveal a notable decrease in the waiting list for treatments, which has dropped by 230,000 since July of the previous year. As of September, the total waiting list stands at approximately 7.39 million, equating to an estimated 6.24 million patients. This reduction of 15,845 patients from the previous month indicates progress in addressing the backlog that has plagued the NHS for years. However, this positive trend comes amidst growing concerns regarding the health service’s capacity to cope with the unprecedented demand, particularly in Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments and ambulance services as winter approaches.

Despite the decrease in waiting lists, the NHS is reportedly nearing its operational limits, with A&E departments facing record numbers of patients. This situation is exacerbated by the seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses and other winter-related health issues. The NHS has been under significant pressure, navigating the dual challenges of recovering from the pandemic while also preparing for the annual surge in demand that winter brings. For example, the NHS has implemented various strategies to manage patient flow and improve service delivery, including increasing staffing levels and enhancing resource allocation to critical areas. Nevertheless, the looming question remains: can the NHS maintain this momentum in reducing waiting lists while effectively managing the immediate pressures of winter?

As the health service continues to strive for improvement, the government and NHS leadership are urged to focus on sustainable solutions that not only address current challenges but also prepare for future demands. The ongoing efforts to reduce waiting times are commendable, yet they must be balanced with a robust strategy to ensure that A&E and ambulance services are adequately equipped to handle the seasonal influx of patients. With public health at stake, the upcoming winter months will be a critical test for the NHS, as it seeks to deliver timely care while safeguarding the health of millions across the UK.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
