Venezuela’s wily ruler digs in to defy Trump

By Eric November 29, 2025

In a political landscape marked by upheaval and resistance, Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, has remarkably managed to withstand numerous efforts aimed at his ousting. Since assuming office in 2013 following the death of Hugo Chávez, Maduro has faced a series of crises, including economic collapse, hyperinflation, and widespread protests. His administration has been challenged by both domestic opposition and international condemnation, particularly from the United States and various Latin American countries. Despite this, Maduro has demonstrated a remarkable ability to cling to power, often employing a combination of political maneuvering, repression, and strategic alliances to maintain his grip on the presidency.

One of the most significant challenges to Maduro’s rule came in 2019 when Juan Guaidó, the then-leader of the National Assembly, declared himself interim president, claiming that Maduro’s re-election was fraudulent. This declaration was supported by several countries, including the United States, which imposed sanctions aimed at crippling Maduro’s government. However, despite the international pressure and a wave of protests across Venezuela, Maduro has managed to consolidate his power. He has utilized the military’s loyalty, which remains a crucial pillar of his regime, alongside an extensive network of social programs that have helped him maintain support among certain segments of the population. Moreover, Maduro’s government has also engaged in negotiations with opposition factions, seeking to create a semblance of political stability while simultaneously undermining dissent.

In recent developments, Maduro has also sought to strengthen ties with countries such as Russia and China, which have provided economic and military support, further bolstering his position. The geopolitical landscape has shifted in favor of Maduro as the global focus on Russia’s actions in Ukraine has diverted attention from Venezuela. This shift has allowed Maduro to navigate sanctions and economic isolation more effectively, showcasing his resilience as a leader in a country beset by turmoil. As Venezuela continues to grapple with economic challenges and social unrest, Maduro’s ability to adapt and survive in the face of adversity remains a testament to his political acumen and the complexities of Venezuelan politics. The future of his presidency continues to hinge on both internal dynamics and external pressures, as the nation seeks a path forward amid ongoing uncertainty.
