High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 29, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation over the past five decades, proving to be a game-changer in the realm of travel efficiency and connectivity. Originating in Japan with the introduction of the Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” in 1964, these trains have since spread to various countries, transforming the way people commute and travel long distances. The Shinkansen showcased the potential of high-speed rail, achieving speeds of up to 320 km/h (200 mph) and setting the standard for subsequent high-speed rail systems worldwide. Countries like France, with its TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), and China, which boasts the world’s largest high-speed rail network, have embraced this mode of transportation, significantly reducing travel times and increasing passenger capacity. For instance, the TGV connects Paris and Lyon in just two hours, a journey that would take nearly four hours by car.

The advantages of high-speed trains extend beyond mere speed; they also promote environmental sustainability and economic growth. Compared to air travel, high-speed trains produce lower carbon emissions per passenger, making them a more eco-friendly option. For example, a study indicated that traveling from Paris to London by Eurostar emits 90% less carbon dioxide than flying. Furthermore, the development of high-speed rail systems stimulates local economies, creating jobs and enhancing regional connectivity. Cities that are connected by high-speed rail often experience a surge in tourism and business opportunities, as seen in Spain, where the AVE network has linked major cities like Madrid and Barcelona, fostering economic integration.

In addition to their economic and environmental benefits, high-speed trains offer a comfortable and convenient travel experience. Passengers enjoy spacious seating, onboard amenities, and the ability to move freely during the journey, unlike the restricted environment of an airplane. With the growing demand for efficient travel solutions, many countries are investing in expanding their high-speed rail networks. As we look to the future, the potential for high-speed trains to play a pivotal role in sustainable transportation solutions is immense, with ongoing projects in the United States and various parts of Asia signaling a commitment to this transformative mode of travel. Overall, the success of high-speed trains over the past 50 years underscores their significance in shaping modern transportation and addressing the challenges of urbanization and climate change.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
