War Secretary Pete Hegseth spends Thanksgiving with US troops in Latin America: ‘We are grateful for you’
On Thanksgiving, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, made a heartfelt visit to Navy sailors stationed in the Latin American region, specifically aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford and the USS Winston S. Churchill. This initiative was part of the Southern Spear mission, which focuses on combating narco-terror networks across Latin America. In a video shared on social media platform X, Hegseth expressed his desire to bring a taste of home to those who are away from their families during the holiday season. Reflecting on his own experiences as a deployed service member, he noted, “I was deployed three times — was always thinking about my family and hoped they were gathering with food and football and all those things. These folks won’t be. We’re going to bring them maybe a turkey and a little bit of cheer.”
During his visit, Hegseth took the opportunity to address a recent incident involving the ambush of two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C. He offered prayers for the victims and their families, emphasizing the bravery and selflessness exhibited by those who serve in the military. “Our minds are also in Washington, D.C., with the two great Americans who were ambushed and targeted,” he stated, reinforcing the connection between the troops at sea and those serving on the home front. His Thanksgiving message to the sailors was one of gratitude, as he acknowledged their sacrifices and commitment to defending the nation. “Whether it’s in our nation’s capital, walking patrol, or whether it’s in our nation’s hemisphere, out at sea, interdicting cartels, defending the American people — we are grateful for you,” he said.
Hegseth’s visit was not only about serving meals but also about fostering a sense of connection and appreciation. He humorously remarked about his generosity during the holidays, stating, “I give out too much candy at Halloween and too much turkey on Thanksgiving.” His address concluded with a nod to the historical significance of Thanksgiving, quoting George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation and offering a prayer for all deployed forces. “Godspeed, God bless, you are in our prayers, and we are grateful. Thank you. Thank you very much,” he said, leaving the sailors with a message of hope and appreciation for their unwavering dedication to service during the holiday season.
