NFL ‘pivoting’ away from having London franchise

By Eric November 28, 2025

In a significant shift in strategy, Brett Gosper, the NFL’s head of Europe and Asia-Pacific, has announced that the league is moving away from the prospect of establishing a permanent franchise in London. Instead, the NFL is pivoting towards expanding its international presence through an increased number of games played outside the United States. This decision marks a departure from previous discussions and speculation surrounding a potential London team, which had been a focal point for many fans and analysts eager to see the NFL solidify its foothold in the UK market.

Gosper’s comments come amid the NFL’s ongoing efforts to globalize the sport and tap into international markets, particularly in Europe and Asia-Pacific. With the league already hosting several games in London each season, including the popular NFL London Games, the focus will now be on enhancing the experience for international fans through a broader array of matchups. For example, the NFL has successfully organized games at iconic venues like Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, drawing significant crowds and fostering a passionate fanbase. This pivot allows the league to maintain its engagement with international audiences while exploring new opportunities in emerging markets.

Furthermore, the NFL’s strategy aligns with its long-term vision of expanding the game globally, as evidenced by recent initiatives such as the NFL International Series and the establishment of the NFL Academy in London. By concentrating on hosting more international games rather than committing to a single franchise, the league can assess market demand and fan engagement more effectively. This approach not only allows for flexibility in scheduling and locations but also fosters a greater sense of excitement and anticipation among fans worldwide. As the NFL continues to explore its international ambitions, this strategic pivot may pave the way for a more dynamic and inclusive global football experience.

Brett Gosper, the NFL’s head of Europe and Asia-Pacific, says the league is ‘pivoting’ away from having a London franchise and focusing on expanding its footprint through more international games.
