Musk’s xAI to build small solar farm adjacent to Colossus data center

By Eric November 28, 2025

In a significant move towards sustainability, an artificial intelligence company has announced its collaboration with a developer to construct a solar farm on an impressive 88 acres adjacent to its data center in Memphis. This initiative marks a pivotal step in the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy sources. The proposed solar farm is expected to generate approximately 30 megawatts of electricity, which, while substantial, will only cover about 10% of the data center’s projected power consumption. This highlights the growing trend among tech companies to invest in renewable energy solutions as they grapple with the increasing energy demands of their operations.

The decision to build a solar farm aligns with broader industry goals to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. As data centers consume vast amounts of electricity, often relying on fossil fuels, the transition to renewable energy is crucial not only for reducing operational costs but also for meeting regulatory requirements and public expectations regarding environmental responsibility. For instance, major tech companies like Google and Microsoft have made significant strides in utilizing renewable energy, with Google announcing its commitment to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. By establishing a solar farm, the AI company is taking tangible steps towards a greener future, although the scale of the project indicates that there is still much work to be done to fully meet its energy needs sustainably.

This solar farm project also serves as a reminder of the importance of innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of renewable energy solutions. By partnering with a developer, the AI company is leveraging expertise in solar technology and infrastructure, which can lead to more efficient energy production and distribution. As the global focus on climate change intensifies, such initiatives are likely to inspire other companies within the tech sector to explore similar partnerships and investments in renewable energy. Ultimately, the Memphis solar farm represents not just a local effort to harness solar power but also a part of a larger movement towards sustainable energy practices in the tech industry.

The artificial intelligence company said it was working with a developer to build a solar farm on 88 acres next to its Memphis site. Given the proposed size, the solar farm would likely produce around 30 megawatts of electricity, only about 10% of the data center’s estimated power use.
