These ships disappeared in Lake Superior a century ago. Watch as they’re found again
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society has made remarkable discoveries in Lake Superior, uncovering the wrecks of two of three ships that sank during a fierce storm over a century ago. The first ship, the “H.M.S. Houghton,” was located in 2021, while the second, the “H.M.S. Aloha,” was found in 2022. These ships were part of a devastating storm that struck the Great Lakes in 1920, resulting in the loss of numerous vessels and lives. The storm was so severe that it has been etched into maritime history, with waves reaching heights of over 30 feet and winds exceeding 60 miles per hour. The Houghton and Aloha, both cargo ships, were caught in the storm, leading to their tragic demise.
The discoveries were made possible by advancements in underwater exploration technology, allowing the shipwreck society to conduct detailed sonar mapping of the lake’s floor. The Houghton was found at a depth of approximately 600 feet, while the Aloha was located slightly shallower, at around 500 feet. These wrecks are not only significant for their historical value but also for the insights they provide into early 20th-century maritime practices and the challenges faced by sailors on the Great Lakes. The society plans to continue its search for the third ship, the “H.M.S. Hesper,” which remains elusive, and hopes that further exploration will yield additional artifacts and information that can help piece together the events of that fateful storm.
The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the maritime history of the Great Lakes, and these discoveries highlight the importance of ongoing research and exploration in understanding our past. The wrecks serve as a poignant reminder of the perils of maritime travel and the unpredictable nature of the Great Lakes. With plans for further dives and research, the society aims to shed more light on the stories of these lost vessels and the sailors who braved the treacherous waters over a century ago. As they continue their mission, these shipwrecks will undoubtedly contribute to the rich tapestry of maritime lore surrounding Lake Superior.
