Trump Announces Deal to Drop Obesity Drug Prices to as Little as $149 a Month

By Eric November 25, 2025

In recent months, the weight-loss medications Wegovy and Zepbound have become widely available to Americans, typically priced around $500 per month. These medications, which are part of a new class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, have garnered significant attention for their effectiveness in aiding weight loss and managing obesity-related health conditions. Wegovy, in particular, is a higher-dose version of the diabetes drug semaglutide, while Zepbound, a newer entrant, has also shown promising results in clinical trials. Both medications work by mimicking hormones that regulate appetite and food intake, leading to significant weight loss in many users.

The introduction of Wegovy and Zepbound comes at a time when obesity is a growing concern in the United States, affecting over 40% of adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has linked obesity to various health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, making effective weight management solutions increasingly vital. The high price tag of these medications, however, raises questions about accessibility and affordability for many individuals. While some insurance plans may cover part of the cost, the out-of-pocket expense remains a barrier for many Americans seeking to utilize these potentially life-changing treatments.

As the popularity of Wegovy and Zepbound continues to rise, discussions around the need for more comprehensive healthcare policies that address obesity and its treatment options are becoming more prominent. Advocates argue that making these medications more affordable could significantly improve public health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs associated with obesity-related diseases, and ultimately save lives. With ongoing research and further developments in the field of obesity treatment, the hope is that more Americans will gain access to effective weight-loss solutions without the burden of exorbitant costs.
