High speed trains are racing across the world. But not in America

By Eric November 25, 2025

High-speed trains have revolutionized transportation across the globe over the past five decades, showcasing their efficiency and effectiveness in connecting cities and regions while reducing travel times. Since the introduction of Japan’s Shinkansen, or “bullet train,” in 1964, high-speed rail has expanded to various countries, including France, Spain, China, and Germany, transforming the way people travel. The French TGV, introduced in the 1980s, further demonstrated the potential of high-speed rail by achieving speeds exceeding 300 km/h (186 mph) and establishing a network that links major urban centers. These advancements have not only made travel faster but have also contributed to economic growth by facilitating easier access to business hubs and tourism destinations.

High-speed trains offer numerous advantages over traditional transportation methods, such as airplanes and automobiles. For instance, they are often more energy-efficient, generating lower carbon emissions per passenger mile compared to cars and planes. Countries like China have invested heavily in high-speed rail, boasting the largest network in the world, which spans over 38,000 kilometers (23,600 miles) and connects over 500 cities. This extensive network has significantly reduced travel times; for example, a journey that once took over 12 hours by conventional train now takes just over 4 hours on a high-speed train. Additionally, high-speed rail systems are designed to operate with remarkable punctuality, enhancing reliability for travelers.

The success of high-speed trains also highlights the importance of government investment and public policy in transportation infrastructure. Countries that prioritize rail development often see substantial returns on their investments, as high-speed trains stimulate local economies and create jobs. The integration of high-speed rail with other forms of public transport, such as subways and buses, further enhances accessibility and convenience for passengers. As nations grapple with the challenges of urbanization and climate change, high-speed trains present a sustainable solution that not only meets the growing demand for efficient travel but also contributes to a greener future. As the world continues to embrace high-speed rail, it is clear that these trains have proven their worth and will play a critical role in the evolution of global transportation.

High speed trains have proved their worth across the world over the past 50 years.
