Far Cry Getting TV Adaptation From Rob Mac and Alien Earth Creator Noah Hawley

By Eric November 25, 2025

The beloved video game franchise “Far Cry” is making its transition to the small screen with an exciting new series set to premiere on FX and Hulu. Produced by Noah Hawley, known for his work on “Fargo” and “Legion,” the series aims to capture the chaotic, action-packed essence of the games while exploring deeper themes of humanity. Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for the project, likening the “Far Cry” series to an anthology where each season will present a new setting and storyline, mirroring the diverse environments and narratives found in the games. This innovative approach promises to keep the series fresh and engaging, allowing it to delve into various themes of chaos and morality, much like Hawley’s previous works.

Rob McElhenney, co-creator and star of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” will take on a leading role and is also producing the show. His excitement for the project is palpable, as he reflects on the opportunity to work alongside Hawley and the support from Ubisoft, the game’s developer. McElhenney’s previous experience with Ubisoft on “Mythic Quest” has likely equipped him with valuable insights into adapting video game narratives for television. The “Far Cry” games have taken players on wild adventures across various settings—from the American wilderness to tropical islands and even the Himalayas—teeming with dynamic characters, including ruthless dictators and eccentric cult leaders. This rich tapestry of content offers a wealth of material for the series, ensuring that each season can explore new narratives while maintaining the franchise’s signature mayhem.

While specific details about the series’ release date and plot are still under wraps, the collaboration between Hawley and McElhenney raises expectations for a unique blend of action, humor, and philosophical exploration. Given the franchise’s history of immersive storytelling and diverse environments, fans can anticipate a series that not only entertains but also provokes thought about the complexities of human nature in chaotic situations. With a creative team that understands the nuances of both gaming and television, the “Far Cry” series is poised to carve out its own identity while paying homage to the iconic video game world. As anticipation builds, viewers and gamers alike are eager to see how this adaptation will unfold, potentially setting a new standard for video game adaptations in the television landscape.

Far Cry is taking its special brand of mayhem to FX and streaming service Hulu with a new series based on the games. Alien Earth’s Noah Hawley is producing with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob Mac starring and producing.
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” said Hawley.
“To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

The plan is for each season of the show to take on a new setting, similar to the games with Mac in the starring role. Details on the release date or content are still under wraps, but the games have given us everything from Montana, USA to the Himalayas and cults, insane dictators and pirates, so there’s plenty to work with.
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” added Mac, who also worked with Ubisoft on Apple’s Mythic Quest, where he played a game developer.
“Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
