Asia’s most treacherous sailing season

By Eric November 25, 2025

In recent months, the plight of Rohingya refugees has taken a heartbreaking turn, as thousands embark on perilous sea crossings in search of safety and a better life. The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group from Myanmar, have faced decades of persecution, culminating in a brutal military crackdown in 2017 that forced over 700,000 to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. Despite living in overcrowded camps with limited resources, many Rohingya have chosen to risk the treacherous journey across the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, driven by desperation and the hope of reaching countries like Malaysia or Indonesia, where they believe they can find refuge and opportunities.

The journey is fraught with danger. Reports indicate that smugglers are exploiting the refugees’ desperation, charging exorbitant fees for overcrowded and unseaworthy boats. Tragically, many do not survive the journey. In recent incidents, boats have capsized, leaving families shattered and communities mourning the loss of loved ones. For instance, a recent tragedy saw a boat carrying Rohingya capsizing off the coast of Thailand, resulting in multiple fatalities. Survivors recount harrowing tales of starvation, dehydration, and the constant threat of violence from both smugglers and the elements. The United Nations has raised alarms about the rising number of deaths at sea, urging countries in the region to bolster search and rescue operations and provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.

The international community is grappling with how to address this ongoing crisis. While some countries have tightened their borders, leading to a resurgence of dangerous sea crossings, others have begun to offer temporary shelter and aid to those who manage to reach their shores. However, the fundamental issues driving the Rohingya’s exodus—systematic discrimination, lack of citizenship, and ongoing violence in Myanmar—remain unresolved. Human rights organizations continue to call for urgent action, emphasizing that the Rohingya deserve not just immediate relief but also long-term solutions that ensure their safety and dignity. As the situation evolves, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will finally bring peace and security to this vulnerable population.
