Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 24, 2025

In a promising development for the National Health Service (NHS), the waiting list for treatments has decreased significantly, dropping by 230,000 since July of the previous year. As of September, the total waiting list stands at approximately 7.39 million, with an estimated 6.24 million patients currently awaiting treatment. This marks a slight monthly reduction of 15,845 patients compared to August, indicating a gradual improvement in the backlog of cases that have plagued the NHS for some time. This decline in waiting times is a welcome relief, especially as the health service gears up for the challenging winter months when demand for services typically surges.

Despite this positive trend in waiting lists, the NHS is facing unprecedented challenges as it approaches its operational limits. Emergency departments (A&E) and ambulance services are experiencing record demand, raising concerns about the capacity of the system to cope with the impending winter pressures. Health officials have warned that the combination of seasonal illnesses, ongoing COVID-19 cases, and a potential flu outbreak could exacerbate the situation. For example, during the winter months, hospitals often see an increase in patients suffering from respiratory illnesses, which can strain resources further. The NHS has been urged to prepare for these challenges, ensuring that they can continue to provide essential services while managing the waiting list effectively.

The latest figures highlight the ongoing efforts by the NHS to reduce waiting times, which have been a significant issue since the pandemic began. Initiatives such as increasing staff levels, optimizing treatment pathways, and expanding capacity in outpatient clinics have all contributed to this decrease in waiting times. However, the pressure on the NHS remains high, and health leaders are calling for sustained investment and support to ensure that the health service can maintain these improvements and handle the anticipated winter surge. As the NHS navigates these complexities, the focus will remain on balancing the reduction in waiting lists with the urgent need to address immediate healthcare demands.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
