McCullum urges England fans to ‘keep the faith’

By Eric November 24, 2025

In a gripping start to the Ashes series, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum expressed profound disappointment following the team’s defeat in the first Test against Australia. Despite the setback, McCullum remains optimistic about England’s aggressive playing style, which he believes provides the best opportunity for success throughout the series. The match, held at Edgbaston, saw England fall short in a tightly contested battle, where Australia capitalized on crucial moments to secure a narrow victory. McCullum highlighted that while the loss is disheartening, the team’s approach—characterized by a bold and attacking mindset—will ultimately serve them well in the remaining matches.

McCullum’s philosophy, often referred to as “Bazball,” emphasizes a fearless approach to batting and bowling, encouraging players to take calculated risks and play with intent. This strategy has revitalized the England team, leading to a series of impressive performances in recent months. However, the first Test showcased the challenges of this approach, as England’s batting lineup struggled to maintain momentum against a disciplined Australian bowling attack. Key players, including Joe Root and Ben Stokes, faced significant pressure, and their inability to convert starts into substantial scores proved costly. Despite the loss, McCullum pointed to the positives in the team’s performance, noting that they created several opportunities that, if capitalized on, could have changed the match’s outcome.

Looking ahead, McCullum is confident that England’s aggressive style will pay dividends in the subsequent Tests. He emphasized the importance of learning from the defeat and adapting their tactics accordingly. With the series still very much in play, the team is eager to bounce back and assert their presence in the contest. The next match promises to be a pivotal moment for England as they aim to level the series and demonstrate the effectiveness of their bold approach. As the Ashes continue, cricket fans will be watching closely to see if England can harness their frustrations into a rejuvenated performance that aligns with McCullum’s vision for the team.

Head coach Brendon McCullum says England are “incredibly disappointed” by defeat in the first Ashes Test but their approach gives them the “best chance” of winning the series.
