Ukraine’s allies say more work needed on US plan to end Russia’s war

By Eric November 23, 2025

In a significant diplomatic move, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, demanding that the country approve a comprehensive 28-point plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia by Thursday. This announcement comes as the four-year war, which has devastated parts of eastern Ukraine and claimed thousands of lives, continues to pose a challenge not only for Ukraine but also for regional stability in Europe. The plan, which has been described as a framework for peace, includes various measures such as a ceasefire, the withdrawal of foreign troops, and the establishment of a timeline for political reforms in Ukraine.

The urgency of this ultimatum reflects Trump’s broader strategy of exerting pressure on both Ukraine and Russia to come to a resolution that aligns with U.S. interests in the region. By setting a deadline, Trump aims to accelerate negotiations that have been stalled for years, with previous efforts failing to yield significant results. The 28-point plan reportedly addresses critical issues such as the status of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and the rights of ethnic Russians in Ukraine’s eastern regions. As part of the proposal, the U.S. has also indicated it may increase military support for Ukraine, further complicating the dynamics of the conflict.

Critics of the ultimatum argue that such pressure could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and lead to a rushed agreement that does not adequately address the needs of the Ukrainian people. Furthermore, there are concerns about the implications of the plan for U.S.-Russia relations, as Moscow has historically rejected any proposals that it views as infringing on its influence in the region. As the Thursday deadline approaches, the international community is closely watching how Ukraine will respond to this bold move by the Trump administration, which could either pave the way for a historic peace agreement or exacerbate tensions further.

US President Donald Trump gave Ukraine until Thursday to approve the 28-point plan to end the nearly four-year war.
