These ships disappeared in Lake Superior a century ago. Watch as they’re found again

By Eric November 22, 2025

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has made significant strides in maritime archaeology by locating two of the three ships that sank during a devastating storm in Lake Superior over a century ago. This discovery is part of an ongoing effort to uncover the stories behind the numerous vessels that have met their fate in the Great Lakes, particularly during the infamous storm of November 1913, which is often referred to as the “Big Blow.” The GLSHS first found the wreck of the “Henry B. Smith” in 2021, a bulk freighter that tragically went down with all hands aboard. The ship was located in remarkably good condition, lying at a depth of about 500 feet, and its discovery has provided valuable insights into the maritime history of the region.

In 2022, the society announced the discovery of the “M. D. Anderson,” another vessel that succumbed to the same storm. This ship was identified at a depth of approximately 450 feet, showcasing the well-preserved state of many shipwrecks in the cold, fresh waters of Lake Superior. The storm that claimed these vessels was one of the most catastrophic in Great Lakes history, resulting in the loss of over 250 lives and sinking more than a dozen ships. The GLSHS’s discoveries not only honor the memory of those who perished but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by mariners in the early 20th century.

The findings underscore the importance of preserving maritime history and the ongoing efforts to explore and document the Great Lakes’ underwater heritage. The GLSHS continues to utilize advanced technology and underwater robotics to locate and study shipwrecks, offering educational programs and resources to the public about the rich maritime culture of the Great Lakes. As they work to locate the third ship from the 1913 storm, the society remains committed to sharing these remarkable stories with future generations, ensuring that the legacy of those lost at sea is never forgotten.
