McClaren quits Jamaica after failing to reach World Cup as Curacao make history

By Eric November 20, 2025

Steve McClaren has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Jamaica national football team following the team’s inability to secure a direct qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. McClaren, who took over the reins in 2022, faced mounting pressure after the Reggae Boyz finished fourth in the CONCACAF qualifying group, falling short of the top three spots that guarantee a place in the prestigious tournament. Under his leadership, Jamaica showcased some promising talent and moments of brilliance, but ultimately, inconsistency plagued their campaign, culminating in disappointing results against key rivals.

The decision to resign comes as part of a broader effort by the Jamaican Football Federation to revitalize the national team and improve its competitive edge on the international stage. McClaren’s tenure included notable matches, such as a hard-fought draw against the United States and a victory over Honduras, yet these were not enough to secure a favorable position in the qualifying rounds. His departure now opens the door for new leadership, as the federation seeks to harness the potential of young players and develop a more cohesive strategy moving forward. The Jamaican team, historically known for its vibrant style and flair, will be looking for a fresh start as they aim to build a squad capable of making a significant impact in future competitions, including the upcoming Gold Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

As the search for McClaren’s successor begins, the focus will be on finding a coach who can effectively blend the nation’s rich footballing heritage with modern tactics and training methods. The Jamaican football community is eager for a turnaround, as the Reggae Boyz have not qualified for a World Cup since their historic debut in 1998. With a wealth of talent emerging from both domestic leagues and international clubs, the hope is that the next coach can inspire the team to rise to new heights and reclaim its place among the world’s football elite.
