Google’s new Scholar Labs search uses AI to find relevant studies

By Eric November 20, 2025

Google has recently announced the testing of an innovative AI-powered search tool called Scholar Labs, aimed at transforming the way users engage with scientific research. This tool is designed to answer complex research questions by analyzing the relationships between words in a query, rather than relying solely on traditional metrics such as citation counts or the popularity of a study within the scientific community. This shift raises important questions about trust and reliability in the scientific research landscape, particularly regarding how researchers and academics will perceive AI-generated insights.

During a demonstration of Scholar Labs, the tool tackled a specific research question, showcasing its ability to identify key topics and relationships within the query. This functionality allows it to surface relevant studies that may not have been previously highlighted by conventional search algorithms. However, the reliance on AI to discern “good” science poses a challenge: how can scientists and researchers trust a tool that bypasses established methods for evaluating research quality? Critics are concerned that without the traditional indicators of a study’s credibility—such as peer reviews and citation metrics—users might inadvertently overlook significant research or be misled by lower-quality studies that the AI algorithm deems relevant.

As Scholar Labs is currently accessible to a limited number of logged-in users, its future impact on the academic community remains to be seen. While the potential for AI to streamline the research process is promising, the scientific community must grapple with the implications of trusting AI to guide their inquiries. Google’s initiative could either revolutionize how researchers access information or complicate the already challenging landscape of scientific research evaluation. As this tool evolves, it will be crucial for Google to address these concerns and build a framework that ensures the reliability and integrity of the research it surfaces.

How much will scientists trust a tool that forgoes typical ways of gauging a study’s popularity with the scientific establishment in favor of reading the relationships between words to help surface good research?
