Waiting list down as NHS ‘approaches its limit’ ahead of strikes and flu

By Eric November 19, 2025

In a recent update, the NHS reported a notable decrease in its waiting list figures, highlighting a reduction of 230,000 patients compared to July of the previous year. As of September, the total waiting list stood at 7.39 million, which translates to approximately 6.24 million patients awaiting treatment. This reflects a modest decline of 15,845 patients from August, suggesting that the health service is making strides in addressing the backlog that has plagued it for years. However, this positive news comes amid significant challenges, as the NHS braces for an unprecedented winter season marked by soaring demand for Accident & Emergency (A&E) services and ambulance response times.

Despite the reduction in waiting lists, the NHS is reportedly nearing its operational limits. Hospitals and healthcare providers are gearing up for what is anticipated to be a particularly challenging winter, with rising cases of respiratory illnesses and other seasonal health issues. For instance, emergency departments are expected to see increased footfall, putting additional strain on resources already stretched thin. The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing challenges posed by staffing shortages and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which continue to impact service delivery and patient care. Health officials are urging the public to utilize services wisely, emphasizing the need for patients to seek care through appropriate channels to alleviate pressure on emergency services.

The NHS’s efforts to reduce waiting times are commendable, yet the health service must navigate a complex landscape of rising demand and limited resources. As winter approaches, the focus will be on maintaining this momentum while ensuring that patients receive timely and effective care. The public can play a crucial role in this by understanding the best ways to access healthcare services, whether through primary care providers or urgent care clinics, thus helping to mitigate the burden on A&E departments. The coming months will be critical for the NHS, and stakeholders are keenly observing how the system adapts to meet these challenges head-on.

The NHS waiting list is 230,000 lower than July last year, even as the health service ‘approaches its limit’ with A&E and ambulances facing record demand ahead of winter. The overall waiting list for September was 7.39 million (an estimated 6.24 million patients) down 15,845 compared to the previous month and 230,000 fewer than July […]
