Tesla safety driver falls asleep during passenger’s robotaxi ride

By Eric November 19, 2025

As Tesla navigates a challenging landscape marked by shrinking profits and an aging vehicle lineup, CEO Elon Musk is pivoting the company’s focus toward innovative business ventures, particularly in robotics and autonomous driving technology. While Musk has grand ambitions for his Optimus robots—envisioning a future where they could follow individuals to deter crime—such capabilities are still on the horizon. The company is also making strides in its robotaxi initiative, with limited services already operational in cities like Austin, Texas, and parts of San Francisco. However, recent incidents have raised significant concerns about safety and the readiness of Tesla’s autonomous technology.

A recent incident involving a Tesla rideshare passenger in San Francisco highlighted these safety issues. The passenger, identified as Reddit user ohmichael, shared a video showing the safety driver asleep at the wheel during the ride. The alarming footage, which captured the driver dozing off three separate times, raises questions about Tesla’s protocols for ensuring the safety of passengers in its autonomous vehicles. Despite the passenger’s attempt to report the incident to Tesla, he received no response, further complicating the narrative surrounding the company’s commitment to safety in its autonomous driving initiatives. This incident underscores the challenges Tesla faces as it seeks to balance innovation with the critical need for passenger safety, especially as it pushes forward with its ambitious plans for fully autonomous driving and robotaxi services.

As Tesla continues to evolve, the company must address these safety concerns to maintain consumer trust and regulatory approval. With the competition in the electric vehicle market intensifying and the demand for reliable autonomous driving solutions growing, Tesla’s future success may hinge on its ability to ensure the safety and reliability of its technologies while delivering on the visionary promises made by Elon Musk.

As Tesla’s
profits shrink
and its model lineup continues to age, the company remains focused on establishing new lines of business. Tesla CEO Elon Musk says there’s not much his Optimus robots won’t be able to do in the future—following people around to
prevent them from committing crimes
is the latest—despite the technology not quite existing yet.

Musk’s
robotaxis
are a little closer to reality, with a kind of limited service being offered in Austin, Texas, as well as parts of San Francisco. But Tesla might need to rethink its approach to safety drivers after a Tesla rideshare passenger in San Francisco took to Reddit
to share a video
of the operator asleep in the driver’s seat.

In fact, the safety driver fell asleep three times during the ride, which took place a little over a week ago, according to Reddit user ohmichael. In his post, which contains a 12-second clip of a man sleeping and then waking in the front seat of a moving Tesla, the poster says he contacted Tesla to report this behavior but never heard back.
