By Eric November 19, 2025

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made a remarkable recovery after suffering a cardiac arrest during an NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2, 2023. In a recent press conference, Hamlin revealed that his life-threatening incident was attributed to commotio cordis, a rare condition that occurs when a sudden blunt force to the chest disrupts the heart’s rhythm. This revelation sheds light on the medical complexities surrounding his incident and highlights the importance of immediate medical response in sports. Following the incident, Hamlin received swift on-field medical attention, which included CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), ultimately saving his life.

Now cleared to resume football activities, Hamlin expressed his gratitude for the support he received from fans, teammates, and medical professionals throughout his recovery journey. He has been vocal about the importance of heart health and the need for awareness regarding commotio cordis, especially in contact sports where athletes are at risk of such injuries. Hamlin’s story has not only raised awareness about this rare condition but also sparked discussions about athlete safety and emergency preparedness in sports. As he prepares to return to the field, Hamlin serves as an inspiring example of resilience, reminding everyone of the critical role that timely medical intervention plays in saving lives during athletic events. His journey emphasizes the need for ongoing education about heart health in sports, as well as the necessity for all teams to have proper medical protocols in place to handle emergencies effectively.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who has been cleared to resume football activities, said Tuesday his cardiac arrest during an NFL game in January was caused by commotio cordis.
