Cop30: UN accused of crackdown on Indigenous people – as it happened

By Eric November 19, 2025

As the second week of the COP30 climate summit unfolds, participants are grappling with intricate issues surrounding fossil fuel dependency, with growing anxiety about the outcomes of the conference. Amidst this backdrop, Colombia has announced that it will host the first international conference focused on phasing out fossil fuels in April 2024. This initiative is a significant step toward addressing the urgent need to eliminate fossil fuels, which are the primary contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Colombia’s commitment to climate action is not only a reflection of its national priorities but also aligns with the global movement for more ambitious climate policies.

Colombia is part of a coalition of 17 nations that have joined the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, a group advocating for a comprehensive framework to phase out fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy sources. During a recent press conference at COP30, representatives from these nations emphasized the urgency of tackling fossil fuel reliance, highlighting that the ongoing climate crisis necessitates immediate and decisive action. The initiative aims to create a legally binding agreement that would facilitate a coordinated effort to reduce fossil fuel production and consumption globally. This move is seen as critical in achieving the goals set out in the Paris Agreement and in limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Colombia’s leadership in this initiative is particularly noteworthy given its recent efforts to combat climate change, including ambitious commitments to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable development. The upcoming conference in April will serve as a platform for nations to discuss strategies, share best practices, and forge partnerships aimed at transitioning away from fossil fuels. As the world faces the dire consequences of climate change, the outcomes of COP30 and the forthcoming conference in Colombia could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of global climate policy and fostering a sustainable energy transition. Advocates are hopeful that these gatherings will galvanize international cooperation and lead to concrete actions that address the climate emergency head-on.
