What smashed the far right in east London? A playbook that said connect, connect, connect | Margaret Hodge

By Eric November 18, 2025

In a recent reflection, Labour peer Margaret Hodge revisits the strategies employed by the Labour Party to combat the rise of the British National Party (BNP) in Barking during the lead-up to the 2010 general election. Hodge draws parallels between the challenges faced then and the current resurgence of far-right movements across Europe, particularly in light of the recent political shifts in the United States with Donald Trump’s return to the White House. She emphasizes that while the context has evolved—marked by the proliferation of social media, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and geopolitical tensions—the fundamental principles of grassroots activism and community engagement remain vital in the fight against extremism.

In Barking, the Labour Party faced a formidable opponent in the BNP, which had gained traction by exploiting local grievances and fears. Hodge recalls how the party mobilized its members and the community to counter the BNP’s narrative, focusing on positive messaging that highlighted diversity and the benefits of multiculturalism. They organized door-to-door campaigns, community events, and engaged with local residents to address their concerns directly. This grassroots approach not only helped to dispel the BNP’s rhetoric but also fostered a sense of unity among Barking’s diverse population. Hodge’s insights serve as a reminder that combating extremism requires not just political strategies but also a commitment to listening to and empowering communities.

As the far right continues to gain momentum, Hodge argues that the lessons learned from Barking are more relevant than ever. In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly through social media, the need for authentic engagement and community solidarity is paramount. She advocates for a proactive approach that prioritizes education, dialogue, and the celebration of diversity as essential tools in countering the allure of populism disguised as extremism. By reflecting on past successes and adapting them to contemporary challenges, Hodge believes that political parties can effectively resist the rise of the far right and promote a more inclusive and equitable society.

Once again, the far right is advancing across Europe, emboldened by the outcome of the 2024 presidential election and the return of Donald Trump to the White House. To turn back extremism masquerading as populism, I believe there are lessons we can learn from our battle against the extreme right in Barking in 2010, when
we crushed the BNP
.
The context is different. There was little social media before 2010; we hadn’t been through a pandemic; there was no major war in Europe and no serious challenge to a rules-based international order.
