Trump Team Calls Maduro a ‘Cartel’ Boss. That Word Doesn’t Mean What You Think.

By Eric November 18, 2025

In July, the Trump administration made a significant move by officially designating the Cartel de los Soles as a global terrorist entity. This designation reflects ongoing concerns about the cartel’s deep ties to the Venezuelan government and its involvement in drug trafficking, corruption, and human rights violations. The Cartel de los Soles, which translates to “Cartel of the Suns,” is believed to be comprised of high-ranking military officials in Venezuela who have leveraged their positions to facilitate and profit from the drug trade. By labeling the cartel as a terrorist organization, the U.S. aims to disrupt its operations and hold accountable those involved in its illicit activities.

This designation is part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to combat the influence of narco-trafficking organizations in Latin America, which are often intertwined with state institutions. The U.S. Treasury’s action is expected to impose sanctions that will target the cartel’s financial networks and restrict its ability to operate both domestically and internationally. For instance, individuals and entities associated with the Cartel de los Soles will face asset freezes and travel bans, further isolating them from global financial systems. This move also underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, which has been exacerbated by years of mismanagement and corruption, leading to widespread poverty and instability.

The implications of this designation extend beyond just financial sanctions; it raises awareness of the ongoing crisis in Venezuela and the role that organized crime plays within it. The Cartel de los Soles is not only a criminal organization but also a symbol of the deep-seated corruption that has plagued the Venezuelan military and government. By taking a stand against such entities, the U.S. hopes to encourage other nations to recognize the threat posed by the cartel and to collaborate on efforts to dismantle its operations. As the situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, aware that the fight against drug trafficking and corruption is crucial for restoring stability and promoting democratic governance in the region.

The Trump Treasury Department officially labeled Cartel de los Soles a global terrorist entity in July.
