Report claims that Apple has yet again put the Mac Pro “on the back burner”
Apple’s Mac Pro and Power Mac towers, once the flagship workstations of the company, have seen a significant decline in regular updates over the years. Historically, these powerful machines were essential for professionals in creative and technical fields, but the Mac Pro has only received four hardware updates in the past 15 years. This includes a 2012 refresh that was largely similar to its 2010 predecessor, highlighting the stagnation in innovation for this line. With the introduction of the M2 Ultra processor in mid-2023, there was a glimmer of hope for Mac Pro enthusiasts, suggesting that Apple might finally commit to a more regular update cycle akin to the more frequently refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines.
However, recent insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicate that those hopes may be misplaced. Gurman reports that the Mac Pro is currently “on the back burner” for Apple, with the company shifting its focus towards a new Mac Studio that will feature the next-generation M5 Ultra chip. This decision comes on the heels of Apple’s strategic move to bypass the M4 Ultra entirely, opting instead to enhance the Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra and M4 Max in the latest refresh. This pivot raises concerns for dedicated Mac Pro users who have been waiting for meaningful advancements and updates, as it appears that the Mac Pro will not see significant new hardware releases until at least 2026.
The lack of updates and the uncertainty surrounding the Mac Pro’s future underscore a broader trend within Apple’s product strategy, where the emphasis seems to be on more versatile and frequently updated models like the Mac Studio, rather than the traditional tower workstations. For professionals relying on the Mac Pro for demanding tasks, this news is disappointing, as it suggests a prolonged period of stagnation for a product line that once represented the pinnacle of Apple’s computing power. As Apple continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the fate of the Mac Pro remains uncertain, leaving many users to wonder if their needs will be met in the evolving landscape of Apple’s hardware.
Apple’s Power Mac and Mac Pro towers used to be the company’s primary workstations, but it has been years since they were updated with the same regularity as the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. The Mac Pro has seen just four hardware updates in the last 15 years, and that’s counting
a 2012 refresh
that was mostly identical to the 2010 version.
Long-suffering Mac Pro buyers may have taken heart when Apple finally
added an M2 Ultra processor to the tower in mid-2023
, making it one of the very last Macs to switch from Intel to Apple Silicon—surely this would mean that the computer would at least be updated once every year or two, like the Mac Studio has been? But Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman
says
that Mac Pro buyers shouldn’t get their hopes up for new hardware in 2026.
Gurman says that the tower is “on the back burner” at Apple and that the company is “focused on a new Mac Studio” for the next-generation M5 Ultra chip that is in the works. As we reported earlier this year,
Apple doesn’t have plans to design or release an M4 Ultra
, and the Mac Studio refresh from this spring included an M3 Ultra alongside the M4 Max.
