NHS issues flu jab SOS with worst of winter only weeks away

By Eric November 18, 2025

The National Health Service (NHS) has issued an urgent appeal for individuals to receive their flu vaccinations as England braces for the onset of the flu season. With the peak of flu activity typically occurring between December and February, England’s Chief Nursing Officer, Ruth May, has emphasized the critical need for eligible adults to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The NHS aims to bolster community immunity and prevent overwhelming healthcare services, which are already under strain from various health pressures. This call to action is particularly relevant given the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, where respiratory illnesses have been more pronounced, and the healthcare system remains vigilant against potential surges.

Eligible groups for the flu jab include adults over 50, pregnant women, and individuals with certain health conditions, such as asthma or diabetes. The NHS has made strides in simplifying access to vaccinations, with many pharmacies and GP surgeries offering the flu jab to ensure that it is readily available to those who need it. For instance, last year, the NHS reported that over 80% of those in the targeted age groups received their flu vaccine, a significant increase compared to previous years. Health officials are hopeful that maintaining or even improving these vaccination rates will help mitigate the impact of seasonal flu, which can lead to serious health complications, particularly among vulnerable populations.

As the flu season approaches, the NHS is not only focusing on vaccinations but also on raising awareness about flu symptoms and the importance of seeking medical advice when necessary. The public is encouraged to be vigilant and to practice good hygiene, such as regular handwashing and staying home when feeling unwell, to help reduce the spread of the virus. With the combination of vaccination and preventive measures, the NHS aims to protect the health of the nation and ensure that the healthcare system can continue to provide essential services without becoming overwhelmed. As Ruth May aptly put it, “We must all play our part in preventing flu this season.”

The NHS has issued a ‘flu jab SOS’, with England’s top nurse warning people to get protected now, with only weeks to go before the worst of the flu season typically bites. Eligible adults are being urged to come forward now, so they are fully protected ahead of the usual flu season peak in the […]
