Eating too much of these foods is driving the rise in type 2 diabetes, study says

A recent study has unveiled a concerning link between the consumption of refined wheat and rice products and the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes globally. Researchers analyzed data up to 2018, revealing that diets high in these refined carbohydrates, coupled with inadequate intake of whole grains, are significant contributors to the increasing number of diabetes cases. This revelation highlights the urgent need for dietary shifts as part of public health strategies to combat the diabetes epidemic.

Refined grains, which have been stripped of their bran and germ during processing, lack the essential nutrients and fiber found in whole grains. The study emphasizes the importance of whole grains—such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat products—which are not only more nutritious but also help regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall metabolic health. With an estimated 422 million people worldwide living with diabetes, the call for increased awareness and education about the benefits of whole grains is more pressing than ever.
