‘We have concerns’ – are summer sports aiming for Winter Olympics?

By Eric November 15, 2025

In a recent statement, the federations governing winter sports have expressed strong opposition to the inclusion of summer sports in the upcoming 2030 Winter Olympics, which are set to take place in the picturesque French Alps. This response comes in light of proposals from organizations representing cross-country running and cyclocross, both of which are traditionally summer sports, seeking to secure a spot in the winter games. The Winter Olympic federations argue that the essence of the Winter Olympics should remain focused on sports that are inherently tied to winter conditions, such as skiing, snowboarding, and ice hockey, rather than diluting the event with activities that do not align with its seasonal theme.

The debate over the inclusion of cross-country running and cyclocross highlights a broader discussion about the evolution of the Olympic Games and the desire for innovation versus tradition. Proponents of the summer sports argue that both disciplines can be adapted to winter conditions, potentially attracting a new audience and promoting inclusivity in the Olympic movement. For instance, cross-country running could be modified to feature snow-covered trails, while cyclocross could incorporate winter elements like snow and ice, creating a unique spectacle for viewers. However, the federations maintain that the Winter Olympics should celebrate the unique characteristics of winter sports, which require specific skills and equipment suited to cold-weather environments.

As the International Olympic Committee (IOC) continues to explore ways to modernize the games and appeal to younger audiences, the push for summer sports in the Winter Olympics raises questions about the future of the Olympic brand. While some argue that expanding the range of sports could invigorate interest and participation, others caution against straying too far from the core identity of the Winter Olympics. With the 2030 games on the horizon, the outcome of this debate could significantly influence the direction of future Olympic events and the sports included in them. The federations’ firm stance against summer sports indicates a desire to preserve the integrity and tradition of the Winter Olympics while also prompting discussions about how best to evolve the games for future generations.

Winter Olympic Federations say they do not want ‘summer sports’ in the Winter Olympics with cross-country running and Cyclocross bidding to be in 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
