Walmart boss retiring after more than a decade

By Eric November 15, 2025

In a significant leadership transition, Doug McMillon, the long-serving CEO of Walmart, is set to pass the baton to John Furner, currently the President and CEO of Walmart U.S. This change comes as McMillon, who has been at the helm since 2014, prepares to step down after nearly a decade of steering the retail giant through transformative changes in the industry. Under his leadership, Walmart has not only expanded its footprint in e-commerce but has also adapted to shifting consumer behaviors, especially during the pandemic. McMillon’s tenure was marked by a strong focus on sustainability and technology integration, which helped Walmart maintain its position as America’s largest retailer amidst fierce competition from online giants like Amazon.

John Furner, who has been with Walmart for over 25 years, is well-positioned to take on this pivotal role. His extensive experience within the company, coupled with his leadership of Walmart U.S., has provided him with a deep understanding of the retail landscape and the challenges it faces. Furner has been instrumental in implementing strategies that enhance customer experience and streamline operations, which are critical as Walmart continues to navigate the complexities of both brick-and-mortar and online retail. As he steps into the CEO role, Furner will likely focus on further integrating technology into the shopping experience and expanding Walmart’s sustainability initiatives, building on the foundation laid by McMillon.

The leadership transition also comes at a time when Walmart is embracing new opportunities and challenges. The retail sector is evolving rapidly, with increasing emphasis on digital shopping and supply chain resilience. Furner’s appointment signals Walmart’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in a competitive market. As he prepares to lead the company into its next chapter, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how he leverages his experience to drive growth and maintain Walmart’s status as a retail leader. This change not only marks a new era for Walmart but also reflects the broader trends in the retail industry, where agility and customer-centric strategies are more crucial than ever.

Doug McMillon is handing over the reins of America’s largest retailer to John Furner.
