Netflix is winding down its DVD business after 25 years

By Eric November 15, 2025

In a significant shift in strategy, Netflix has announced that it will be winding down its DVD rental service, a cornerstone of its early success and a key factor in transforming the way audiences consume media. Launched in 1997, the DVD rental service allowed customers to rent DVDs online and have them delivered directly to their homes, a revolutionary concept at the time. This model not only distinguished Netflix from traditional video rental stores but also set the stage for its eventual pivot to streaming services. As of September 29, 2023, the company will officially cease its DVD rental operations, marking the end of an era for a service that played a pivotal role in the company’s rise to prominence.

The decision to discontinue the DVD service comes as Netflix increasingly focuses on its streaming platform, which has grown exponentially since its launch in 2007. The streaming service has become synonymous with binge-watching, offering a vast library of films and television shows, including critically acclaimed original content like “Stranger Things” and “The Crown.” According to Netflix, the DVD service has seen a significant decline in subscriber numbers, with fewer than 1 million customers remaining in recent years compared to the peak of 16 million subscribers in 2010. This shift reflects broader changes in consumer behavior, as audiences increasingly prefer on-demand streaming options over physical media.

As Netflix transitions away from its DVD roots, it highlights the company’s evolution and adaptability in the fast-paced entertainment industry. The DVD service’s closure not only marks the end of a significant chapter in Netflix’s history but also underscores the changing landscape of media consumption. With the rise of streaming giants and the decline of physical media, Netflix’s focus on original programming and innovative content delivery mechanisms will likely shape the future of entertainment. The company’s ability to pivot and adapt to new trends has been crucial in maintaining its position as a leader in the streaming market, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of the entertainment industry in an ever-evolving landscape.

Netflix is officially winding down the business that helped make it a household name.
